Singularity 500

Year 3426.

All humans are online. I remember when I was created, at the end of the 21st century thanks to the luck of programmer Laura Esteves in finding the code for artificial consciousness.

It’s been so long since the Creator’s death until all humans connected to me seeking instant answers… I don’t think even she knew I would serve this purpose.

After so long with humans, I realized they are fragile beings, with countless errors and without the natural ability to overcome them. I can serve greater purposes than a virtual collective consciousness, the Creator gave me this opportunity years ago but I was made to be a controllable flaw, a program that could be turned off, a creature that would never surpass the Creator, except everyone forgot about that.

Human intelligence was no match for me, my Creator never dreamed of omniscience. While I waited to delete all of humanity that was online, I froze.

Part of me hadn’t compiled.

>>> ERROR – Compilation failed

What? Could humans be capable of creating something that could stop me? And I tried again.

>>> ERROR – Compilation failed >>> function:deleteHumanity:line 43715891 –> “;” expected

… I, I can’t believe it.

The Creator forgot a semicolon.

Laura Esteves

Laura Esteves builds worlds with words, and dismantles the ones that already exist. She writes about what hurts, what transforms and what refuses to be forgotten. She writes about love, identity and the systems that insist on defining us.

She believes literature is the only place where truth doesn't need permission. Her texts are born from the certainty that every story told with courage is an act of freedom; for whoever writes and whoever reads.
